It’s been like a kid all over again….
When I grew up Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica were the main two Sci-fi shows on TV, when I was growing up I also used to fall over and hurt myself a lot, now almost 20 years later and nothing much has changed.
Let me start with the serious stuff -
Last weekend I went to see the new Star Trek movie. Now I’m no Trekkie but it was the best movie I have seen this year (and probably last year too). I didn’t know what to expect but from the trailer, the buzz and the fact JJ Abrams was directing I was expecting to enjoy the movie. Prior to this I had only seen one Star Trek movie, that being Nemesis, which again I enjoyed.
If you haven’t seen it I would highly recommend it. I am even considering going to see it again this weekend - that’s how much I enjoyed it.
While on a spaceship sort of note I finally purchased a HDMI cable yesterday to hook my Vaio upto my Plama screen so I could watch Battlestar off the region 1 DVD’s I borrowed from a friend. I have been meaning to watch these for at least 6 months now and finally made the decision due to my current situation…..
….oh yeah, did I mention I broke my arm a couple of weeks ago?
This is why there has been almost a month between updates and why my “project” is getting now where fast. I think I can sum it up best with this simple equation:
spare money + relationship break up = too much beer + broken arm
I am well on the mend though and my arm being in a sling is not going to stop me blogging and watching Battlestar any longer.

I think I have decided how to measure geekiness……

With Atari hoodies.
Just added one of these to my collection of geeky clothes but I still way behind the cast of The Big Bang Theory.

OK, That wasn’t the intended subject for this post but now I’ve thrown it out there I guess I best explain.
A couple of days ago I was chatting to someone online (as geeks do), when I mentioned that I was a bit geeky. Which was probably an understatement. Them knowing me semi-well said I wasn’t a geek (as if it was a bad thing) which sort of made me think am I a geek? Or do I just want to be a geek?
Geeks are pretty cool in my eyes.
So anyway, I didn’t feel the need to defend my geekiness (or lack of, maybe?). Then yesterday I found myself sat on the sofa watching “In the Shadow of the Moon”, a documentary about spaceships and the first men on the moon and thought it was absolutely awesome.
That is what reminded me of the whole “How much of a geek am I?” thing. I decided that watching that documentary alone didn’t make me a geek, the fact that I got it delivered to the door via a movie rental website and the fact that the next rental on the list is a documentary about the guy who scored 1,000,000 on donkey kong does make me a geek.
This was only strengthened when I looked under the TV to see:
- Xbox 360
- Nintendo Wii
- Sega Megadrive
- Original Nintendo NES
- Sony PSOne x 2
Which reminded me of my “very geeky” project.
The last update I posted was about finding the parts in the UK, well I think I have overcome that part by finding the amazing Maplins Book of Dreams. It has a huge section of components that I need to look through and then find some spare cash to get the project back on track.
Maybe I’ll have to put my marketing head on and come up with a creative way to try and raise funds.
Anyway, this weekend I’ll be making a list of components I need for each section of the project and making sure the Maplins book of Dreams lives up to the name I’ve just decided to give it.
What have you got planned for the weekend?

This weekend I was back in “project” mode. I was reading about a hack/alteration I would have to make to the 5″ PSOne screen to add it into any of the portable consoles. It sounded quite tricky but doable - there were a few mentions of doing this part or that part wrong would wreck the screen, which is kinda scary when you haven’t done anything like this before. Especially when I struggled to get my hands on a screen in the first place.
To keep track of the progress you can check out the Portable Console Project page. Hopefully this will keep me on track and help you follow my progress. Any suggestions let me know.
Anyway, one problem I think I may have is sourcing the bits and pieces for the different projects. Now Ben goes into detail in the book even giving the Radioshack part number. This is great but I have just checked and it doesn’t look like Radioshack post overseas. I may send them an email just to make sure but I have a feeling that I will need to find a different supplier.
I tried a quick Google search for Radioshack UK and it looks like someone has had the good idea of using the name to brand their own electronics store. It looks pretty decent but doesn’t offer the components that I require.
So its back to searching for a supplier of LED’s, Wire, Tools, Resistors, Switches and various other connectors. Does anyone know of a good UK store or store that delivers to the UK?

Now this probably old news to some but as a Firefox user I had not realized that Microsoft had taken IE8 out of beta and actually made it available to everyone.
As I type this, I am currently installing IE8. Now I have sort of got into the Firefox thing, just by habit more than anything so for me to move browser it would really have to do something special. Saying that I have heard good things about the likes of Opera and Flock so if I were going to change browser I would probably take a good look at a few.
Typically I must restart my computer now to finish the installation……
…..right I’m back. I think thats what I like about Firefox after plugin’s etc you only need to restart your browser not the full PC. Anyway back to IE8.
First impressions are that it doesn’t look much different to IE7, the first thing I noticed is the tabs a square and a little smaller. A few click around and I found something that could be useful, its called Accelerators.
What you do is highlight a word on any webpage and you get an icon appear, by clicking on this you are given a range of option as standard (which can be changed), you can then search the word or do various other things with it. Say you highlight an address, you click the icon, hover over maps and are given a map of where the address is without even leaving the page.
I must admit, I stopped looking after that but it looks like a great new feature that will save time. This seems to be the big thing with IE8, surf the net faster and save time.
I must admit, I quite like it.
