Can you measure geekiness?

Posted by Ninja Geek on 04.24.2009 at 1:59 pm

OK, That wasn’t the intended subject for this post but now I’ve thrown it out there I guess I best explain.

A couple of days ago I was chatting to someone online (as geeks do), when I mentioned that I was a bit geeky. Which was probably an understatement. Them knowing me semi-well said I wasn’t a geek (as if it was a bad thing) which sort of made me think am I a geek? Or do I just want to be a geek?

Geeks are pretty cool in my eyes.

So anyway, I didn’t feel the need to defend my geekiness (or lack of, maybe?). Then yesterday I found myself sat on the sofa watching “In the Shadow of the Moon”, a documentary about spaceships and the first men on the moon and thought it was absolutely awesome.

That is what reminded me of the whole “How much of a geek am I?” thing. I decided that watching that documentary alone didn’t make me a geek, the fact that I got it delivered to the door via a movie rental website and the fact that the next rental on the list is a documentary about the guy who scored 1,000,000 on donkey kong does make me a geek.

This was only strengthened when I looked under the TV to see:

  • Xbox 360
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Sega Megadrive
  • Original Nintendo NES
  • Sony PSOne x 2

Which reminded me of my “very geeky” project.

The last update I posted was about finding the parts in the UK, well I think I have overcome that part by finding the amazing Maplins Book of Dreams. It has a huge section of components that I need to look through and then find some spare cash to get the project back on track.

Maybe I’ll have to put my marketing head on and come up with a creative way to try and raise funds.

Anyway, this weekend I’ll be making a list of components I need for each section of the project and making sure the Maplins book of Dreams lives up to the name I’ve just decided to give it.

What have you got planned for the weekend?

good luck with your project, i have been following your writings about your progress so far but of course it’s hard to always stay motivated, especially when you’re having trouble finding all the components. oh and i dont think there really is a way to measure geekiness, it’s all relative.

I’d be modest enough to say that we’re just a mighty bit geeky–compared to your stuffs under the tv. lol. I and my kids used to have a Sega. They wanted a Nintendo, but I persuaded them to have PC with Internet connection. Now, they play their own kind of games online. :)

But where is the point of measuring geekiness and I do not think that there is any word so called GEEKINESS.

What do you think ?

11. Christian Jessen - May 5, 2009

I would say your definitely a geek - certainly beats me if we were to compare, even though I see myself as pretty geeky..
I dont think you can define geekiness at all… Theres so many different way of being “geek”, and its so often also used on the same level as a “dork” / annoying person - which is really wrong..

But I’ll vote on your a geek. Good luck with the project. ;)

If someone wants to know if you are a Geek that person just has to read your blog. You are a Geek!

13. Hotelbackpacker - May 7, 2009

Measured or not, its okay. The important thing is to be happy with what you are doing. Me, a geek? yes and no. (lol)

14. itot - May 7, 2009

it depends on what scale you’re going to use!ahehe

15. Nerd's and their games - May 10, 2009

I guess you can measure geekiness.

first measure is looking at what someone likes. if the things are more geek related (stuff like sci-fi, comics, role playing games, video games etc) they are a bit geeky.

But you can then use that as a starting point and by finding how much knowledge this person has about something you can tell how much a nerd they are.

the more they know the nerdier they are.

if they don’t really know that much beyond the basic information then they are either just a little geeky or not really geeky and just happened to passingly like something

it’s all relative.does this makes me a geek ? lol

Personally, I think there’s a geek in all of us :) We all have that sort of personality no matter how small of a percentage that might be. I wish you luck on your project! Hope it turns out well.

18. Paspaaditlem - May 18, 2009

Yeah me too. I think we all have a geek in us, but at different levels. I just got a Super Nintendo for my birthday with Super Mario World. One of the greatest gifts ever!

19. wrestling moves verne - May 19, 2009

Nice collection of video game systems!

20. Ninja Geek - May 20, 2009

Thanks WMV. Still working on adding a N64 to that collection shortly and will be getting my son a second Wii so I can tinker with this one ;)

I think the geek culture is back and is in full swing, some people still think of it as a negative thing but any true geek is happy when reffered to as a geek, whether its meant as a put down or not.

21. Poster Printing - May 22, 2009

You have all those gaming consoles under your TV? My my, how do you find time to play all those? :) There goes certain proof of geekiness. Yeah, good luck with your project, and go geeks! :)

22. Steve Cross - May 26, 2009

We all have that sort of personality no matter how small of a percentage that might be

23. Woking News - May 28, 2009

24. Range Rover Grill - June 1, 2009

Yeah, I’ve invented a Geekometer :D

25. Hindi Videos - June 10, 2009

With all these tv shows, Geekiness is becoming very sex today, so it can’t be a bad thiing.

26. Simon Leach - July 2, 2009

Can I offer a scenario for a measure of geekiness, and you can respond with a number on the scale of 1 to 10, 10 being super-geek? Here goes, how geeky is this. You get together with a lot of fellow enthusiasts, maybe even hundreds, for at least two to three days. Everyone shares common interests, lingos, and even clothing style. That’s right, you are at a paintball scenario event where you will re-fight a mock D-Day invasion of Europe over an entire weekend. Geeky or macho? I mean, at least you are playing with guns…
