Its Time For Web Accelerators
Now this probably old news to some but as a Firefox user I had not realized that Microsoft had taken IE8 out of beta and actually made it available to everyone.
As I type this, I am currently installing IE8. Now I have sort of got into the Firefox thing, just by habit more than anything so for me to move browser it would really have to do something special. Saying that I have heard good things about the likes of Opera and Flock so if I were going to change browser I would probably take a good look at a few.
Typically I must restart my computer now to finish the installation……
…..right I’m back. I think thats what I like about Firefox after plugin’s etc you only need to restart your browser not the full PC. Anyway back to IE8.
First impressions are that it doesn’t look much different to IE7, the first thing I noticed is the tabs a square and a little smaller. A few click around and I found something that could be useful, its called Accelerators.
What you do is highlight a word on any webpage and you get an icon appear, by clicking on this you are given a range of option as standard (which can be changed), you can then search the word or do various other things with it. Say you highlight an address, you click the icon, hover over maps and are given a map of where the address is without even leaving the page.
I must admit, I stopped looking after that but it looks like a great new feature that will save time. This seems to be the big thing with IE8, surf the net faster and save time.
I must admit, I quite like it.

I think u like Firefox much more than IE…………..but wat i did’nt liked about your blog is the presentation…………u should try out with some themes……which r more impactive…
Actually, Firefox has a version of Accelerators too, it is called “KALLOUT - Accelerators for Firefox” It’s available as a free add-on through Firefox. See: http://bit.ly/vJKbW
Bundling Accelerators into IE8 makes a lot of sense. Selection-based search is really helpful. One GREAT feature of KallOut is BestGuess. The challenge with selection-based search is that the user has to figure out which one to apply to his selection. It’s a little clunky once you get more than two or three. KallOut does a super job figuring out which accelerator you need to use for a given selection-based search request. Kallout — Accelerators for Firefox is actually kind of spooky when it works so well.
Check it out! I agree that it’s a big step forward for the user to have the selection-based search bundled into the browser by default, however.

I will try IE8 myself for me to find out :). but it is really hard to change browser since I have been using Mozilla ever since.
Microsoft lost a lot of users with the buggy unsecure IE 6, it is going to take a lot to get people to go back.
The big issue these days with performance is Javascript is everywhere (including these comments).
While microsoft is playing catchup, the javascript performance of chrome, opera and firefox 3 is awesome.
I’d forgot all about Chrome Greg, does anyone here use that?
James - there are probably 50 differnt firefox addons that I would think are awesome if I ever got round to looking for some. I’ll be sure to give this one a go.
Nikhil - What do you suggest gets changed?
i recently installed safari and i assure you its faster than firefox. I hope you know that firefox is alot faster than IE.
Ever since I use Firefox I forgot IE
… firefox for me id the most reliable, secure and fast browser. What I also love about firefox is the ability to tweak it’s settings and the available addons and cool themes.

I am also using Firefox and something really big would have to change to change it to something else. I use many plug-ins and don’t even know if other browsers have them available.
Maybe its time for me to try Safari, Opera or Chrome then.
I made the jump to firefox a long time a go as it was a better web development tool and it was faster.
I still have hiccups with it and am currently running 3.0.8

I use FireFox and I think is great, but must admit that latelly I started to testing Opera and in some cases it was far faster than FF. One thing is not ok in Opera is the huge tabs that anoys me a lot.

I love firefox and doubt i will ever switch
My friend in GIT working on an accelerometer project, using it for music change according to body movements. I duno crap abt it, but sounds very interesting
i think so fire fox the best for me.any time i am using fire fox great service is provided to us fast to faster browser update to update tools i think so is a big advantage for us…….
for firefox is the best. thats my browser and I am comfortable using it.
I’ve been using Firefox as my main browser for years, but I installed IE 8 just to check it out. And I must say that I am really impressed with the Web Development Tools they have added under the Tools Menu. The built in script debugger has worked perfectly for all my simple script debugging needs. Because of this I have been spending more time playing around in IE than I have done in years.
Will certainly save time copy & pasting, going to website X whatever.
Will have to check it out.
Thanks for tip
I am a firefox user and lover. I am really impressed with the Web Development Tools they have added under the Tools Menu in fire fox. Sounds like an interesting new feature. I’ll have to download IE8 and try it out for myself.
The new IE8 does have some cool new features but after using it for a couple weeks I am not happy with it. It often gets tripped up over scripts and causes freezing or crashes the tab. I do like that it is usually able to recover a tab after crashing it, but in general I prefer Firefox where these things rarely happen and I can have all the add-on features I want.
I’ve been using Firefox forever now it seems and I just don’t know if I’d ever switch over to IE8 even with the accelerator. I’m sure its only a matter of time before Firefox creates something like it and improves on it.
I used to love the shack as a kid
I prefer using Firefox instead of IE. Ever since I love the features in firefox.
I have been an avid FF fan for a long time now. I just checked out the new IE and it looks like I will still rely on FF for my day to day browsing.
This is a good informative post. I use firefox and I think that’s great. It totally meets my needs at work.
Firefox all the way - the plugins are great.
For me the best side is Opera - I think you should try it if you don’t know it! Really!

Yes you are right accelerators are the main new feature in IE8 other than that it’s quite similar to IE7, I use both IE and FF for different purposes but FF still seems to be faster than IE for me.
If Chrome has the toolbars and other stuff that IE and FF has I would use that as I feel that is the fastest to browse.
Just wonder if there are as many holes that need to be patched up like in IE6 and IE7…we will see.
Im a Firefox worshiper myself. I just cant take FF and its addons out of my life. But even this die hard fan of firefox was amazed by IE8. IE8 is a great product. It loads the site faster than any browser I have ever seen (even chrome, okay I havent tested the latest chrome that came out a few days ago).
Also it obeys the web standards, for a change. SO its faster and better. Though now enough compelling to make me leave my loving FF. cant wait for firefox v3.5
